Susan Hughes

Susan Hughes (born 1960) is a Canadian author of children's books.〔http://www.susanhughes.ca/about.php〕 She is also a freelance editor of educational materials and she provides manuscript evaluation and coaching services for writers.〔http://www.susanhughes.ca/manueval.php〕
Susan can't remember a time when she didn't love reading and writing. When she was in elementary school, at John Ross Robertson Public School in Toronto, she was a member of the school's library club, called The Book Worms. She read every single book in the school library! Her favourite ones were about dogs and horses.
When she was ten, she and several friends from the neighbourhood started a small writing club. They met to share their poems and stories. They gave each other encouragement as well as constructive criticism.
Susan went to junior high at Glenview Senior Public School and then high school at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute. She studied English literature for one year at Queen's University and then completed three more years at the University of Toronto.
While a university student, Susan got a fabulous summer job at a children's publishing company, Crabtree Publishing. She learned all about writing, researching, editing, proof-reading, and working as a team. She was hooked on children's books! When she graduated, Susan worked for a year with Crabtree and then began freelancing as an editor and writer, while also working on her own books.
Susan has written over 25 children's books, both fiction and non-fiction books. She is currently writing the eighth book in the lively and popular chapter book series THE PUPPY COLLECTION (Scholastic Canada).〔http://www.scholastic.ca/books/authors%26illustrators/susan-hughes〕 She is thrilled that two of her books have won the Norma Fleck Award for Canadian Children's Non-fiction: CASE CLOSED? NINE MYSTERIES UNLOCKED BY MODERN SCIENCE (Kids Can, 2010), illustrated by Michael Wandelmeier, which won the award in 2011,〔Norma Fleck Award#2011〕 and OFF TO CLASS: INCREDIBLE AND UNUSUAL SCHOOLS AROUND THE WORLD (Owl Kids, 2011) which won the award in 2012.〔http://www.bookcentre.ca/awards/norma_fleck_award_canadian_childrens_nonfiction〕
In 2012-2013, she was pleased to be one of four Writers-in-Residence for the Toronto District School Board.〔http://www.tdsb.on.ca/_site/ViewItem.asp?pageid=34062〕
Susan's books have been translated into over seven languages. Her daughter created a book trailer for OFF TO CLASS: INCREDIBLE AND UNUSUAL SCHOOLS AROUND THE WORLD, which you can view here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ew858k-Pkj4
